LE PONT DE MONTVERT

L’Auberge des Cévennes is nestled at the heart of Le Pont de Montvert, the perfect place to start your exploration of this historic village with its thriving local community. Built at 875 metres above sea level on the banks of the river Tarn, life in Le Pont de Montvert is shaped by the presence of the river. The village spans both banks, and has all the amenities you could possibly need, including a cash machine, post office, pharmacy, doctor, petrol station, tourist office, environmental museum, bakery, grocery store and greengrocer, weekly market, butcher, delicatessen, newsagent and bar.

Cross the bridge to the right bank, passing the recently refurbished village clock, and stroll along picturesque lanes through a maze of stone-built houses to breathtaking viewpoints; or continue on to the temple, a reminder of the Camisard rebellion, which started here in the village.

LAND

If for you, the beauty of nature includes Steppe-like grassland as far as the eye can see, rolling hills, sheer-walled valleys and dense forest landscapes, this is just the place. Lozère has it all, and more.

The Cévennes have been a National Park for over 50 years, with some areas classed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011. It’s the perfect spot for outdoor enthusiasts and sports buffs, or simply if you love wide open spaces.  With over 5,000 km of waymarked trails, it’s a hiker’s paradise, and cyclists, mountain bikers and trail runners will find everything they dreamed of. At 1,700m above sea level, the highest point is at Mont Lozère ski station, which is also open to visitors.

WATER

Take a dip in the natural swimming pool by the Auberge, with direct access to the beach on the banks of the Tarn, marked out and supervised throughout the day in summer: it’s the ultimate spot for cooling off after an energetic day’s hiking.

Water features everywhere, in all its forms: springs, waterfalls, natural pools and of course the river, fast-moving in some places, calm and gentle in others. Why not explore it by canoe, or, in springtime, watch experienced kayakers navigate the wild waters starting from the famous bridge.

AIR

In 2018, the Cévennes National Park became the world’s thirteenth International Dark Sky Reserve, the second in France (the first being Pic du Midi) and the largest in Europe. Stars, constellations and the Milky Way are all visible to the naked eye, an increasingly rare phenomenon these days.

It’s all down to low light pollution and exceptionally high air quality.

So in daylight hours, make your way up and – simply breathe!
